Chapter 27: How to Read the American News (Filtering the noise)
If you watch American news (CNN or Fox), you will think the country is literally burning down.
The News is a Product, not a Service.
27.1. News as Entertainment
In the US, news channels are private companies that need Ratings to sell ads.
- Conflict sells. This is why every issue—from a mask mandate to a tax cut—is framed as a “Civil War” between the Good Guys and the Bad Guys.
- The Reality: If you turn off the TV and go for a walk in a suburban neighborhood, everything is quiet, people are polite, and no one is arguing about politics.
27.2. The Global Blind Spots
American news is Hyper-Local.
- They will spend 30 minutes on a local kidnapping and 30 seconds on a massive earthquake in Turkey or an election in India.
- The Filter: Most Americans have no idea what “The QUAD” is or what is happening with the Indian economy. They aren’t “hiding” the truth; they just don’t think their audience cares.
27.3. Policy vs. People
- The Government: Might be critical of India’s human rights or trade policies.
- The People: Usually have a very high opinion of Indians (smart, hard-working, family-oriented).
- Recommendation: Don’t take a negative New York Times article about India as a “Personal Attack” from all Americans. It is just one voice in a very loud room.
Practical Takeaway for the Indian: Read the “Wall Street Journal” for facts and the “Associated Press” (AP) for neutral news. Avoid the 24/7 cable news cycle—it is designed to make you anxious, not informed.
