Chapter 23: To Stay or Return? (The "Desi Dilemma")
Chapter 23: To Stay or Return? (The “Desi Dilemma”)
Every Indian in America has a “5-Year Plan” to return home. For 90% of them, that plan lasts for 30 years.
23.1. The Nostalgia Trap
When you think of India, you think of the India you left.
- You remember the festivals, the family dinners, and the “ease” of life.
- You forget the pollution, the corruption, the traffic, and the lack of privacy.
- The Reality: The India of today is not the India of 2010. It is faster, more expensive, and more competitive. If you go back, you aren’t “returning home”; you are moving to a new country.
23.2. India FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)
You watch your friends in Bengaluru or Gurgaon buying apartments, starting companies, and living “king-sized” lives. You feel like you are “stuck” in a boring US suburb.
- The Trade-off: In India, you have “Social Wealth.” In America, you have “Systemic Peace.” You must choose which one you value more.
23.3. The Final Choice: The Children
The biggest reason Indians stay in America is their Children.
- Once your child is in 5th Grade, they are an American. Moving them back to India is a trauma for them. They will be “foreigners” in their own parents’ country.
- Most Indians realize that by giving their children the “American Opportunity,” they have given up their own “Indian Belonging.”
Practical Takeaway for the Indian: Stop saying “I’m going back next year.” It keeps you from fully living in America. Either commit to the return (set a date, save the money, sell the house) or commit to America. Living in the “In-Between” is the fastest way to burn out.
