Chapter 19: Food: From Fusion to Fast Food

Chapter 19: Food: From Fusion to Fast Food

Food in America is a Drug, an Identity, and a Status Symbol.

19.1. The “Sugar” Shock

The first thing you will notice is that American bread, sauces, and even meats taste sweet.

  • Corn Syrup: It is in everything.
  • The Freshman 15: Many Indians gain 15 pounds (7kg) in their first year because they don’t realize how high the calorie count is in “standard” American food.
  • Portion Distortion: A “Small” soda in the US is a “Large” in India. Americans are used to massive plates. The social norm is the “Doggie Bag”—taking your leftovers home is expected, not shameful.

19.2. “Americanized” Cuisines

Don’t expect “Mexican” food to taste like Mexico or “Chinese” to taste like China.

  • Taco Bell is American.
  • Panda Express is American.
  • These are “Fusion” cuisines designed to be cheap and fast.
  • The Desi Scene: Depending on where you live, you can find incredible Indian food. But be prepared: “Spicy” in America means “Mild” in India. If you want it hot, ask for “Desi Spicy.”

19.3. The Bar as the Social Hub

In India, “drinking” is often a hidden or slightly taboo activity. In America, the Bar is the primary social space for adults.

  • Networking: Many business deals and office bonds happen over a beer.
  • The Choice: You don’t have to drink alcohol (order a “Mocktail” or a Soda), but you should go. Being the person who “never goes to the bar” is seen as being anti-social.

Practical Takeaway for the Indian: Learn to read the “Nutrition Facts” on the back of every box. And remember: if the portion is too big (it always is), ask for a box. No one is judging you.
