Chapter 8: Federalism: Why States Matter More Than the Center
Chapter 8: Federalism: Why States Matter More Than the Center
When Indians think of “The US Government,” they think of the President in the White House. But for your daily life, the President is almost irrelevant.
The United States is a collection of 50 small countries with a shared defense and currency.
8.1. The “United” States is a Misnomer
The laws in California are completely different from the laws in Texas.
- Income Tax: Some states have 10% tax; some have 0%.
- Social Laws: Things that are legal in Washington state could land you in jail in Alabama.
- Climate: You aren’t moving to “America.” You are moving to a Desert (Arizona), a Tundra (Minnesota), a Swamp (Florida), or a Mediterranean coast (California).
8.2. The Power of the “State”
In India, we are moving toward a more centralized system (The “Center” in Delhi). America is the opposite.
- The School System: Your children’s education is determined by your “Zip Code” (your local neighborhood), not a national board.
- The Police: There is no “National Police.” Every city and county has its own rules.
8.3. Moving for Ideology
Americans often “vote with their feet.” If they don’t like the politics of New York, they move to Florida. This creates “Echo Chambers” where entire states become “Red” (Conservative) or “Blue” (Liberal).
Practical Takeaway for the Indian: Choose your State as carefully as you choose your Job. Your lifestyle, your taxes, and your children’s future will depend more on the “Governor” than the “President.”
